Stamford’s William Barker is Lincs Boys 8 & U Runner-up

Lincs Boys 8&U Runner-up - William Barker

William played in the 85th Lincolnshire Junior Closed Championships on Friday 2nd September at Boston Tennis Club.

There were 12 boys in William’s age group for 8&U (Mini Red). The players were split into 2 divisions and each division played a Round Robin format ,where the boys played one match against every boy in their division.

William won 4 out of his 5 round robin matches. This meant he finished second in his division which took him through to play a cross-over semi-final against the winner of the other division. William played well and won the semi-final comfortably. Through to the final, he once again faced the boy he had lost to in the round robin, 10-1! William was determined to fight back in the final. A long, tight match followed, William losing 10-8 to his opponent, who had served very well throughout.

William finished County runner up in his first singles competition and is pictured with his trophy.

William’s coach Carole Wilson said later ‘I am delighted with William’s performance in the County Closed. He combines good tactical awareness and rapidly improving technical skills with a fierce competitive spirit. He also displays good sportsmanship regardless of a match’s outcome. He has taken the opportunity to identify some areas of his game to work on, learning from his defeats while enjoying his victories. An excellent performance all round. Well done!”

Thrapston Mini Oranges triumph against Northampton County

Thrapston & District triumph against Northampton County

In their final game of the league, Thrapston’s Mini Oranges were up against Northampton County and, with nothing to lose, came out determined to give a good account of themselves.

Thrapston’s team was Andrew, Oscar, Josh and Sophie.

First up was the doubles. Andrew and Oscar were playing together for the third time this season and put in a good doubles team performance before unfortunately coming out second best as they went down 2-7, 5-7. Josh and Sophie were next to play and, in a match with some excellent rallies, Thrapston finally won their first match, 7-1, 7-3.

With the overall score level after the doubles it was time for the first singles round. Andrew lost to County’s top ranked  player. However, Andrew showed he was not going make it easy for his opponent, taking it to three sets before losing 2-7, 7-5, 2-7. Oscar then faced County’s second player. In what was probably the tightest match of the day, Oscar’s resiliance paid off, winning 7-5, 5-7, 7-5. At 3, Josh was involved in a tight match, finally coming through 7-3, 4-7, 8-6. In at 4, Sophie was last up and won her first ever match, 7-3, 7-2, proving too strong for the County number 4.

Thrapston were now ahead in the match, 4-2. The second round of singles matches was also very close. Andrew won his match 7-5, 7-5. Oscar was narrowly defeated by County’s strongest player, but it again went to the third set, Oscar turning round a 7-0 deficit in the first set to take the second 8-6. Final score: 0-7, 8-6, 3-7. Despite hurting his wrist, Josh played through and managed to win 8-6, 7-2. Sophie won the final match of the day, 7-5, 9-7.

Thrapston’s Head Coach Pete Harding said ‘ I am delighted not only that Thrapston managed an overall victory of seven matches to three today but that, despite losing every match in their previous league fixtures, the players never gave up and carried on giving one hundred percent! A lot of credit should also go to the County team today as, despite losing the tie, each match was very close and on another day the score could perhaps have been totally different. Well done to both teams.’

Thrapston Mini Reds lose a tough match against Corby ITC A

Thrapston & District Mini Reds versus Corby Indoor Tennis Centre (Away)

Thrapston were up against another strong team in Corby A.

Thrapston’s team was: Andrew, Hollie, Oscar and Kira.

First up was the doubles round. Andrew and Oscar got off to a good start, managing to take the first set but unfortunately failed to capitalise, losing the next two sets. It was a great effort as they were definitely the underdogs but they put in a very determined effort. Hollie and Kira played well in the second doubles but went down in straight sets.

Next was the first round of singles matches. All four players lost,  Oscar’s match being the closest with a 7-4 7-4 defeat. In the second round of the singles, Corby again showed their superior skills winning all four rubbers, Hollie came closest this time losing 9-7, 7-2.

Overall, the Thrapston players showed a real determination to do their best and never gave up, even when it became obvious that they were the weaker team on the day. Well played Corby.

Peter’s Award

The effort and success of building up a sizeable tennis programme at Thrapston by coach Peter Harding has been rewarded by an award from the LTA.

Harding, who has been the head professional at Thrapston for over three years, has developed a small unit into a body now proudly flexing its muscles after a dramatic rise in numbers.

Harding is employed by R2R Tennis, which has been run by Ralph Clarke for the past five years and Clarke said: “During Peter’s time at Thrapston the pair of us have put together a full schools’ programme, a free coaching programme inclusive of all children, catering for all ages and abilities.”

He added, “We have set up programmes ranging from mini players to adult beginners along with cardio tennis sessions, produced regular competing juniors and put together a team of coaches and assistants and formed junior teams for leagues.”

Summing up he said, “Three years ago there were 10 children on coaching courses at Thrapston and no adults and now there are 70 participating players on the coaching programme on four nights a week.”

Harding’s LTA recognition came in the form of a monthly national award which coincided with Andy Murray receiving the player award!

Clarke added, “Pete is organised, professional and delivers a very high standard of coaching on court.”

As well as his work at Thrapston, Harding has also been head professional at Oundle for the last six months.

Oundle Mini Red Result

Oundle U8s vs Dallington U8s (Mini Red)

Oundle were at home to Dallington with strong winds making playing conditions very tricky. At times it was even moving entire nets across the courts. It would be fair to say that Dallington coped better with the conditions. Oundle’s team was Cameron, Arnie, William and Benjamin. For most of the Oundle players it was their first ever competitive match. Dallington were very strong and won every match for a final score of 0-16. Cameron and William both came close to victory but just lost out, 7-10 and 9-11 respectively. Arnie and Benjamin both worked hard but for little reward.

Head Coach- Pete Harding said ‘The playing conditions were horrible today and Dallington coped with it better than us. However, even though we didn’t win a match, it was good experience for all the team. Each player kept their head up and still enjoyed playing. Well Done.’.
