Stamford’s William Barker exceeds expectations at Northampton 9U Event

William went into his 2nd Orange tournament at Dallington LTC in Northampton with low expectations following a very tough (Grade 4) first Orange tournament at Peterborough a few weeks earlier. He set himself the goal of winning 2 matches, because he knew some of the stronger competitors from his performance squad sessions.
However he played five box matches (round robin) and won them all to achieve his place in the final. The toughest match of the five was against Henry Grayson, his friend & squad partner. William lost the first set 7-1 with number of unforced errors but he recovered and put Henry under pressure by moving him around the court with some well placed shots, forcing errors from his opponent. At 1-1, William took charge of the match and won the final set.

In the final William came up against a very experienced player from Cambridge. William had a set point in the first set but lost after 2 clear points. The match was concluded in 2 sets after a close fought battle, with William pleased with his performance against a tough opponent.

Results:
1. Archie Reid – won 7-3, 7-4. 2. Joshua Bright – won 7-5, 7-0. 3. William Richards won 7-3, 7-1, 4. George Criteson won 7-3, 7-5 and 5. Henry Grayson – won 1-7, 7-5, 7-4.
The final v Alex Boyd-Bench lost 6-8, 4-7.

In the closest event yet, most of the groups and matches were very close with many of the results going past first to 10 and had to be won by 2 clear points. All the teams won some matches but special mentions go to Kettering, who were competing in their first event and won 8 matches and to the Challenger team which comprised two players from Oundle and two players from Thrapston Tennis club to make a extra team.

Stamford took the glory on the day with a impressive 14 wins but they were pushed all the way by the Challenger Team who won 13 Matches. Thrapston came in third with 12 wins, which shows how tight the result was.

The event was judged a great success by organisers, parents and players alike. The next event in the circuit is to be in June at Bourne Tennis Club.

Final Positions:

2nd: Challengers – 13 wins

Oakham’s Ana Webber has a Happy Easter

Oakham’s Ana Webber won the 14U girls’ singles title in the Grade 3 Easter Anglia Junior Open over Easter. Having a bye in the first round, she progressed through 3 further rounds before eventually winning the match against the number one seed in the final. Ana then went on to compete in the grade 3 Cambridge LTC Easter tournament where once again she progressed to the final. This time she lost to the number 1 seed in a hard fought match, so came away with the runners up trophy.

Both events attracted players from various counties throughout the UK.

In addition, 14 year old Ana competed in her first Tennis Europe event at Nottingham Tennis Centre. She gained acceptance into the qualifying draw and progressed through to the final round before unfortunately losing out to the number 1 seed.

Oakham’s Ana Webber(14) joins Leicestershire Under 18 squad

Ana joined the 18U Leicestershire Winter County Cup Squad for their recent competition.

Leicestershire performed very well, beating Oxford (8-1) and then Cornwall (6-3). The last day’s match was against Devon where they lost to to a very strong team (5-2). Leicestershire finished in 2nd place.

Paula, Leicestershire’s Captain, allowed their young reserves to play one singles each and Ana played against Devon. Ana played at number 6 against a  higher rated player and lost the match 6-1, 6-4. Devon overall had the highest rated players, giving Ana a very tough initiation into the older age groups. Ana really enjoyed her experience though!

With the 14U County Cup coming up in May, Ana is ‘all set’!

Oakham’s Mini Red Tournament a Great Success

Sunday the 26th February saw Oakham Tennis club host a Mini Red Team Event. Six teams were involved ,Oakham, Stamford, Bourne, Oundle, Thrapston A and Thrapston B. Each team had 4 players in a team and players were seeded 1 to 4 with all the 1st seeds playing each other and so on. The team with the most wins at the end of the day would determine the winner of the Event.

Most of the teams had some combination of experienced and new new match players. It was a great way to get the young players used to playing competitively but in a friendly atmosphere.

The Teams were:

Thrapston A – Zoe Chisnall, Josie Phillips, Hugh Roberts and Joseph White.

Stamford – Lucy James, Harry Atkin, William Stanier, and Will Barker

Oakham – Joshua Sennet, Max Dean, Jenna Davies and Daniel Bradford

Bourne – Daniel Nieuwenhuizen, Sullivan Cooke and Harry Leverton

Oundle - Cameron Hodnett, Samuel Webster, Jakob Bonnett and Dylan Hooper

Thrapston B – Kieran Queenan, William Pratt, Harvey Borrett and Thomas Cowell.

The closest group were the 3rd seeds with Thrapston A, Stamford and Oundle all winning 4 matches to tie the group.

All the players seemed to have a great time, the end result was very close, coming down to just one match. Bourne managed two wins which was a good effort when taking into consideration that they had only novice players and were also a team of only 3 due to injury.  Joint 4th  position went to Oundle Tennis Club and the hosts, Oakham, with eight wins each. Third place was claimed by Thrapston +District B team with nine wins. September’s winners Stamford achieved an excellent tally of 13 wins but could only finish in Runners Up position, pipped at the post by winners,  Thrapston + District A team, with an impressive 14 wins.

Tournament organiser Pete Harding said the whole event was played in a friendly manner which all the children enjoyed. Every player gave 100 percent effort and nothing more could have been asked from them.

Final Positions:

1st: Thrapston &District A – 14 Wins, 2nd: Stamford – 13 Wins, 3rd: Thrapston &District B – 9 Wins,

4th=: Oakham and Oundle – both with 8 Wins, 6th: Bourne – 2 Wins
